Baseball Avoids Storm
The Lions’ baseball team defeated Lake Erie College 11-6 Sunday afternoon at Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' baseball team defeated Lake Erie College 11-6 Sunday afternoon at Henderson Field. Mars Hill improved to 4-10 on the season while the Storm fell to 3-4 overall.
Phillip Carroll led the Lions at the plate hitting a grand slam homerun in the eighth inning. Dylan Powers was 2-4 with the same number of runs scored and a RBI. Alex Zachary was 1-4 with a homerun, a run scored and two RBI. Zach Davies pitched four innings in relief to pick up the win (1-1) for the Lions on the mound.
Aaron Lindgren led the Storm going 2-4 with a homerun and two RBI. Chris Tomschack suffered the loss (0-1) on the mound for Lake Erie throwing two innings in relief.
Lake Erie got on the board first scoring two runs in the top of the third inning before Powers singled to left field in the bottom half of the inning to drive in Evan Rogers and make the score 2-1.
A Lance Edwards single in the fourth inning plated Carroll to tie the contest at 2-all. The Storm scored a single run in the fifth frame before the Lions took the lead for good in the bottom half of the fifth when Alex Zachary hit a two-run shot to right-center that gave the Lions a 4-3 advantage they would not relinquish.
Mars Hill added two more runs in the sixth inning before the Storm cut the Lions' lead to 6-4 in the seventh inning. Mars Hill sealed the win in the eighth inning scoring five runs on two hits highlighted by Carroll's grand slam. A two-run homerun by Lindgren in the ninth inning ended the scoring and made the final score 11-6 in favor of the Lions.
Mars Hill will host King University on Monday, March 9, in a double-header beginning at 2 p.m. The games were originally scheduled for Tuesday but the weather forecast of rain in the area has pushed the games up one day.
