Baseball Defeats Southern Wesleyan
The Lions defeated Southern Wesleyan University 9-3 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions defeated Southern Wesleyan University 9-3 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Henderson Field. Mars Hill improved to 11-16 on the season while the Warriors fell to 5-24 overall.
Tommy Scala went 3-4 with a triple while David King was 2-4 at the plate with a double and four RBI to lead the Lions' offensively. Evan Rogers, Rayshelon Carolina and Dylan Powers had two hits apiece in the win as well. Rogers and Powers added doubles. Zac Brown picked up the win (3-3) pitching six innings allowing five hits and three runs. Kaleb McCurry obtained his first save as a Lion throwing the final three innings allowing just one hit while striking out five batters.
Michael Hyman led SWU at the plate going 2-4 with a homerun, two stolen bases and a pair of runs scored. Tyler Rio suffered the loss (0-7) on the mound for the Warriors.
The Lions scored four runs in their first at-bat on one hit and two SWU errors. King had a two-RBI single in the inning.
Rogers walked to lead off the second inning and then stole third before Powers doubled to right center field to send him home and give MHU a 5-0 advantage. SWU got on the board in the third frame on solo homeruns by Hyman and Daniel Coleman to make the score 5-2.
Mars Hill plated three more runs in the third inning on five hits and one Warrior miscue to extend their advantage to 8-2. The at-bat was highlighted by a two-RBI double by King.
Luke Hostetler hit a RBI double in the sixth inning to score Hyman to end the scoring for SWU. Powers drove in an insurance run in the eighth inning when he singled to plate Carolina and make the final tally 9-3 in favor of the Lions.
Mars Hill will play a double-header at Montreat on Thursday, March 26. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
