Baseball Sweeps Pfeiffer
Lions defeat the Falcons 10-6 and 10-5
MARS HILL, N.C. – Ten proved to be the magic number for the Mars Hill baseball team as the Lions scored 10 runs in each game of a doubleheader sweep of Pfeiffer. Mars Hill won the opener 10-6 and the nightcap 10-5. Mars Hill improves to 9-14 on the season while Pfeiffer drops to 15-13.
Game 1: Mars Hill 10, Pfeiffer 6
Rayshelon Carolina went two-for-two with a double, two RBI and a pair of runs scored to lead the Lions at the plate. Dalton Eisenbath was also 2-2 with three RBI and a double. Caleb Harbin was two-for-two with two doubles and the same number of RBI. Joshua Epley threw four innings scattering three hits to pick up his first win (1-0) as a Lion. Lane Grant threw three innings to obtain the save (1) for MHU.
The teams traded runs in the first inning when Anthony Allende hit a solo homerun to left field and then Dalton Eisenbath doubled to right field to drive in Rayshelon Carolina.
After Josh Sereno started the Lions' second at-bat with a double, he was moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Caleb Harbin. Zach Honeycutt then hit a line drive to left field to plate Sereno and give the Lions a 2-1 advantage.
The Lions exploded for five runs in the third inning on four hits highlighted by a two-RBI double from Caleb Harbin to extend the Lions lead to 7-1
Pfeiffer scored four runs in the fourth inning on one hit and one Lion miscue. Allende recorded two RBI in the at-bat for the Falcons. Eisenbath singled to right field in the bottom of the fourth frame to drive in Carolina and give the Lions an 8-5 lead.
Carolina hit a two out double to left center field to score Rogers and Harbin to extend the Lions advantage to 10-5 after five innings of play. Pfeiffer hit a pair of doubles in the seventh inning to add a single run and make the final tally 10-6 in favor of the hosts.
Game 2: Mars Hill 10, Pfeiffer 5
Rayshelon Carolina and Luke Baker each went two-for-four at the plate. Carolina drove in three runs, while Caleb Harbin went on-for-two with two RBI. Adam Daniel earned the win (1-0), allowing an unearned run on three hits with a walk in 1.2 innings of work.
The Falcons scored two runs in their first at-bat on two hits and one Lion error. Allende hit a RBI double in the inning. Powers singled to right center field in the bottom half of the inning to drive in Rogers and cut the Lions' deficit to 2-1.
Pfeiffer scored single runs in the second and third innings to lead 4-1. Tommy Scala hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning to score Rogers and bring MHU within 4-2 of the Falcons.
The Lions broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning. Harbin worked a bases-loaded walk to score Alex Zachary. Carolina cleared the bases with a double down the right field line and would later score on a Phillip Carroll double.
Pfeiffer trimmed the Lion lead to 7-5 in the fifth as Damon Smith scored on a Lion error. Mars Hill added two runs in the bottom half of the frame on a Harbin base hit and an Evan Rogers sacrifice fly. David King provided the final run for the Lions as he led off the sixth with a solo home run to left field.
Mars Hill will play a three-game South Atlantic Conference series at Wingate this weekend. The teams will play a single game at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 20, and a double-header at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 21.
