Baseball Beats Wingate in 10 Innings
Mars Hill defeated Wingate 7-5 in 10 innings in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday night at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field.
WINGATE, N.C. – Mars Hill defeated Wingate 7-5 in 10 innings in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday night at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Lions improved to 10-14 overall and 5-10 in the league. The Bulldogs fell to 18-9 on the season, 10-9 in the conference.
Nick Villalobos had the most important hit of the game, a two-RBI single with two outs in the top of the tenth inning to plate the winning runs. Rayshelon Carolina and Tommy Scala had three hits apiece to lead MHU offensively. Carolina scored the twice, had an RBI and a run scored. Scala scored once. Chandler Young recorded the win (2-0) pitching the final six innings in relief. He allowed only one hit, no earned runs and struck out six Bulldog batters to help lead the Lions to victory.
Bill Krebs led Wingate at the plate going 2-3 with a homerun and two RBI. Brandon Donahue suffered the loss (0-2) for the Bulldogs on the mound throwing the last inning in relief.
Wingate scored two runs in their first at-bat before the Lions added a single run in the third inning when Dylan Powers singled to left field to drive in Carolina. MHU then scored three runs in the fourth frame on three hits and one Wingate error to take a 4-2 lead. Wingate added a single run in the bottom half of the inning when Krebs hit a solo homerun to center field and make the score 4-3.
After trading singled runs in the fifth frame, Wingate tied the contest at 5-all in the sixth inning when Bradley Brown crossed the plate on a Michael Godinez infield single.
After Evan Rogers drew a one-out walk and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch, Carolina singled to left field to put runners on the corners for the Lions. A lineout by Powers gave MHU two outs on the board when Villalobos came to bat. He then hit a ball into the right-center gap that sent Rogers and Carolina home and seal the win for the Lions. Chandler Young faced four batters in the bottom of the tenth inning to pick up his second win of the year.
The teams will convene for a double-header at 1 p.m. to complete the three-game series.
