Baseball Loses Season Opener, 2-1
Lion baseball loses season opener in the ninth inning to Limestone, 2-1.
FLORENCE, S.C. – Kyle Booth hit a singled to right field with one out in the ninth inning to lift Limestone over Mars Hill 2-1 in baseball action at Sparrow Stadium. It was the season opener for both teams.
David King led the Lions at the plate going 1-4 with an RBI. Dustin Jones went 1-2 with a run scored while Alex Zachary was 1-4 with a double. Caleb Edwards started the game on the mound and threw 5.1 innings. Edwards allowed only three hits and no runs. Patrick Riehl threw the final three innings in relief and suffered the loss (0-1). He scattered five hits and allowed two runs.
Chris Scura led Limestone going 2-4 with two runs scored. Julian Bridges followed going 2-3 with a double while Booth was 1-4 with the game-winning RBI. Cameron Culp threw the final inning in the game to pick up his first win on the season. He did not allow a hit and struck out two batters.
Limestone scored the first run of the game in the seventh inning after Avi Ahlzadeh doubled to left-center field to plate Scura. The Lions tied the contest in the eighth frame when King singled to drive in Dustin Jones. Jones reached base after getting hit by a pitch.
Scura led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single to left field. After a sacrifice bunt from Ahlzadeh moved Scura into scoring position, Booth pushed Scura across the plate for the game winning run with a single to right field.
Mars Hill will play Pfeiffer on February 1, 2014. The game will be played at Sparrow Field on the campus of Francis Marion University.
