Baseball Wins Weekend Series Over WSSU
The Lions split a baseball double-header with Winston-Salem State to capture the weekend series against the Rams, 2-1.

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions split a baseball double-header with Winston-Salem State to capture the weekend series against the Rams, 2-1. WSSU won game one 8-4 and then Mars Hill won the nightcap, 6-0. MHU improved to 14-18 on the season while the Rams fell to 20-11 overall.
Game 1: WSSU 8, MHU 4
Nick Villalobos led Mars Hill going 3-4 with a double and a run scored. Caleb Edwards took the loss (5-2) for the Lions on the mound.
Rafael Gonzalez led WSSU at the plate going 3-5 with a homerun, a double and two runs scored. Colby Keane was 1-4 with a three run homerun. Aaron Hatch threw eight innings scattering seven hits while striking out seven batters to obtain the win (4-2) for the Rams on the mound.
Gonzalez and Anthony Nutall hit back-to-back homeruns in the third inning to put the Rams on top 2-0. A RBI double from Eisenbath in the fourth inning sent Villalobos to the plate to bring the Lions within a single run (2-1).
Keane sealed the win in the fifth inning belting a three-run homerun to left field. The Rams added two insurance runs in the seventh frame and one in the eighth to lead 8-1 going into the Lions' last at-bat. Mars Hill made a late comeback in the ninth inning scoring three runs on two hits but Austin Comesanas recorded the final two outs for the Rams to pick up his first save on the year.
Game 2: MHU 6, WSSU 0
Dale Innes pitched five innings allowing just a single hit while striking out seven batters to lead the Lions to a 6-0 shutout over WSSU in the nightcap. Andy Runion stepped in and threw the last two innings and did not allow a hit while striking out two batters to help the Lions record the shutout over the Rams.
Tommy Scala and Evan Rogers led MHU offensively with two hits apiece. Scala added a triple. Dalton Eisenbath hit a two-run homerun and recorded three RBI in the victory.
Levi Grassley accounted for the Rams' hit in the loss. Ryan Mayhew took the loss (0-2) for WSSU on the mound.
Eisenbath hit a two-run homerun in the Lions' second at-bat to score what would later prove to be the game winning runs thanks to solid pitching by the Lions. MHU added four insurance runs in the fifth frame on the same number of hits to make the final tally 6-0 in favor of the hosts.
Mars Hill will host Montreat College in a double-header on Wednesday, March 26. The first game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
