Baseball Defeats Bluefield State, 10-6
The Lions’ defeated Bluefield State College 10-6 in baseball action Thursday afternoon at Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' defeated Bluefield State College 10-6 in baseball action Thursday afternoon at Henderson Field. Mars Hill improved to 12-17 overall while the Blues fell to 8-11 on the season.
Dalton Eisenbath and Nick Villalobos led the Lions at the plate with three hits and two RBI apiece. All of Villalobos' hits were doubles. David King went 2-2 with two doubles and the same number of RBI. Jacob Rand was 2-4 with three runs scored, a double and an RBI. Hunter Boydston picked up the win (1-1) on the mound throwing 7.0 innings scattering six hits allowing just a single run and striking out four batters.
Dale Davis led BSC going 3-5 with a double, triple, two RBI and three runs scored. Jacob Hall was 2-4 with two doubles. Ridge Sibold took the loss (3-1) for the Blues on the mound.
The Blues struck first in their opening at-bat when Ricky Diaz doubled down the right field line to score Dale Davis who reached earlier on a triple to right-center field.
The Lions answered scoring four runs on five hits. Jacob Rand, David King and Nick Villalobos hit doubles in the inning to lead MHU at the plate. Mars Hill added three more runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 7-1. All three of the hits in the at-bat were doubles by King, Phillip Carroll and Villalobos.
Mars Hill added two insurance runs in the seventh frame when Villalobos doubled to drive in Dalton Eisenbath and then Alex Zachary singled to center field to plate Villalobos. BSC cut the Lions' lead to 9-3 in the top of the eighth inning after Dale Davis scored on a sacrifice fly from Alex Dunn and then Ricky Diaz crossed the plate on a fielder's choice.
The Lions ended their scoring in the eighth inning when Eisenbath singled to right field to score Jacob Rand. Rand led the inning off with a single and then stole second to get into scoring position.
The Blues scored three runs in the ninth inning but that was as close as they would get. Dale Davis hit a two-RBI double to left-center field to account for two runs and then Tanner Lilly hit a double to drive in Davis.
Mars Hill will host Winston-Salem State University for a non-conference three-game series this weekend. The teams will meet for a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. and then play a double-header at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
