Baseball Splits with Wingate
The Lions split a double-header with Wingate on Saturday after in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions split a double-header with Wingate on Saturday after in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Henderson Field. Mars Hill took their season record to 10-17 overall and an even 9-9 in the league. The Bulldogs are 17-7 on the season and 12-5 in the conference.
Game 1: Mars Hill 12, Wingate 4
Caleb Edwards threw eight innings scattering nine hits allowing just two earned runs to pick up his fifth win (5-1) on the year to lead the Lions to a 12-4 victory over Wingate in game one. Adam Daniel led MHU at the plate going 2-5 with five RBI and a grand slam homerun. Evan Rogers, Phillip Carroll and David King followed with three hits apiece. Rogers added an RBI and a triple while King hit two doubles. Carroll drove in two runs. As a team, the Lions belted a season high 21 hits in the victory. The 12 runs scored was also a season best for the Lions.
Bill Krebs led Wingate at the plate going 2-3 with two RBI. Brad Cherry was 2-4 with an RBI while Stephen Vaughan took the loss (1-2) on the mound for the Bulldogs.
Michael Godinez hit a triple to center field to drive in Justin Somers and give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead after Wingate's third at-bat. Evan Rogers scored on a Wingate error to tie the game at 1-all in the bottom half of the third inning.
Bill Krebs singled through the left side to plate Josh Clark to put the Bulldogs back on top 2-1 in the fourth inning. Evan Rogers hit a triple to right field to score Dustin Jones and tie the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth frame.
The Lions then scored five runs in the fifth inning on four hits and one Lions error highlighted by a grand slam homerun by Adam Daniel. It was Daniel's first homerun of the season.
Clark started the sixth inning reaching on an error and later scored on a single by Brad Cherry to cut the Bulldogs' deficit to 7-3. Phillip Carroll began the bottom of the sixth hitting a single to left field and Daniel later sent Carroll to the plate on a single to center field to give the Lions a 8-3 advantage after six innings of play.
The Lions added two more runs in the seventh inning on three hits before Wingate added their final run of the game in the top of the eighth inning when Krebs scored Thomas Spitz on a sacrifice fly. The Lions ended the scoring in the bottom half of the eighth inning scoring two more insurance runs on four hits. Andy Runion and Carroll hit RBI singles in the at-bat.
Game 2: Wingate2, Mars Hill 0
Josh Clark broke open a 0-0 game in the top of the seventh inning when he hit a single to right field to score Justin Somers who reached base after getting hit by a pitch. That was the Bulldogs only hit in the game. Clark later gave Wingate a 2-0 advantage after scoring on a wild pitch.
After walking Jacob Rand to begin the bottom of the seventh inning, Currie was able to finish his complete game shutout with a strike out, fly out and ground out to obtain his fourth win (4-1) on the year.
Dale Innes pitched extremely well for MHU allowing just a single hit in the 2-0 loss (3-2). Innes also threw a complete game striking out 10 Wingate batters. Adam Daniel went 2-3 at the plate to lead the Lions offensively.
Mars Hill will host Bluefield State in a double-header at Henderson Field on Monday, March 17. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
