Baseball Falls to Francis Marion, 6-4
Mars Hill lost to Francis Marion in baseball action 6-4 Sunday afternoon at Sparrow Field. Phillip Carroll and Evan Rogers led the Lions with three hits apiece.
FLORENCE, S.C. – Mars Hill lost to Francis Marion in baseball action 6-4 Sunday afternoon at Sparrow Field. The Lions fell to 0-3 overall while the Patriots improved to 2-0 on the season.
Phillip Carroll and Evan Rogers led the Lions with three hits apiece. Carroll added a pair of doubles, a triple and a run scored. Rogers also scored a run. Andy Runion took the loss (0-1) on the mound for MHU.
Zac Lenns led FMU with two hits and three RBI. Isaac Davenport went 2-3 with two RBI and the same number of runs scored. Daniel Barfield picked up the win (1-0) pitching five scoreless innings and scattering five hits.
FMU scored two runs in the third inning on a bases loaded walk and a fielder's choice. The Lions scored their first run in the sixth inning after Tommy Scala crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Nick Villalobos.
FMU then scored four runs on five hits and two Lion miscues to take a 6-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning. The Lions fought back in the bottom half of the frame scoring three runs on three hits and one Patriot error. That was all the scoring the game would see. MHU had runners on base in the eighth and ninth innings but Patriot relief pitcher Jeffrey Stoner was able to keep the Lions from crossing the plate in Mars Hill's final two at-bats.
Mars Hill was scheduled to play at Belmont Abbey on Tuesday. Due to the threat of rain, the game has been pushed back a day to Wednesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
