Carson-Newman Defeats Lions in Series Opener
The Mars Hill baseball team lost 11-3 to Carson-Newman on Friday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference action at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – The Mars Hill baseball team lost 11-3 to Carson-Newman on Friday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference action at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. With the win, Carson-Newman improves to 12-9 on the year and 7-6 in league play, while Mars Hill drops to 7-13 on the season and 6-7 in league play.
David King went three-for-four with three singles and an RBI to lead Mars Hill. Dalton Eisenbath went two-for-four with a single, double and run scored, with Phillip Carroll also going two-for-four with a single, double and run scored. Alex Zachary reached on a single in his only plate appearance and scored a run. Mars Hill smacked 13 hits but stranded 11 men on base.
A three-run home run by Cody Fox gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead after an inning. Carson-Newman added a run in the second inning as Brandon Roberts reached on a leadoff double and scored on a wild pitch.
Mars Hill got on the board in the fourth as Carroll led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a King single.
Carson-Newman scored seven runs in the fifth inning thanks to a three-run home run from Gooch Greer, a single, sacrifice fly and two wild pitches.
The Lions added a pair of runs in the eighth inning on a Marc Marsh single that plated Eisenbath, and a bases-loaded walk to Dustin Jones that scored Zachary.
Quinton Yocum earned his second win of 2014, allowing one run on nine hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings of work. Patrick Riehl was charged with the loss after he allowed four runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in two innings.
The Lions and Eagles complete the three-game conference series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
