Baseball Wins SAC Opener 8-1 over Anderson
The Lions’ baseball team won their home opener against Anderson University 8-1 this afternoon at Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' baseball team won their home opener against Anderson University 8-1 this afternoon at Henderson Field. It was also both teams' South Atlantic Conference opening game. Mars Hill improved to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Trojans fell to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in the league.
Caleb Edwards threw seven innings scattering the same number of hits and did not allow an earned run to pick up his first win (0-1) on the year. He struck out five batters and did not allow a single walk in the contest. Tommy Scala had a great day at the plate going 3-4 with two RBI, a pair of doubles and two runs scored. He added a stolen base and recorded four put-outs in center field. Dalton Eisenbath was 2-2 with two RBI, a triple and two runs scored. Andy Runion went 2-3 with an RBI.
Kyle Bailey and Paul Como posted two hits apiece to lead the Trojans. Spencer Earle took the loss (0-1) on the mound for Anderson throwing four innings.
Adam Daniel put the Lions on the board in the second inning when he doubled to right field to drive in Eisenbath and David King. A throwing error led to Anderson cutting the Lions' lead to a single rune (2-1) in the top of the third inning. MHU answered scoring four runs on three hits to put the game away in the bottom half of the inning. Eisenbath had an RBI triple in the at-bat.
A double by Scala in the fifth frame scored Phillip Carroll to extend the Lions' lead to 7-1. A single to right field by Eisenbath plated Scala and made the final tally 8-1 in favor of the hosts.
The teams will meet tomorrow at 12 p.m. for a double header to close out the three-game SAC series.
