Baseball Beats Brevard 5-4 in Series Opener
The Lions’ halted a late comeback by Brevard to obtain a 5-4 victory at Henderson Field in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' halted a late comeback by Brevard to obtain a 5-4 victory at Henderson Field in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon. Mars Hill improved to 6-10 overall and an even 5-5 in the SAC. The Tornados fell to 5-8 on the season and 3-6 in the league.
Tommy Scala led MHU at the plate going 2-4 with a homerun, two RBI and a run scored. Dalton Eisenbath followed going 3-4 with a double and a run scored. Jacob Rand was 1-4 with a two-RBI single. Nick Villalobos picked up the win on the mound pitching four innings in relief. He scattered five hits and allowed two runs while striking out three batters.
Kody Spencer led the Tornados offensively going 2-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Chip Helton and Hunter Donaldson also tallied two hits in the contest. Kevin Hamilton suffered the loss for Brevard throwing seven innings.
Brevard got on the board first in the contest when Kody Spencer doubled to left field to left field to drive in Chip Helton.
The Lions tied the game in the third inning when Tommy Scala singled to right field to plate Phillip Carroll. A two-out double by Carroll put him in scoring position.
The Tornados regained the lead (2-1) in the top of the fourth inning on two hits and one Lion error. Hunter Donaldson hit a double to right field to score Spencer who reached earlier on a single through the left side.
Brevard led 3-1 after their sixth at-bat when Bennett Hixson singled to right field to drive in Alex McGee. The Lions then recorded four runs on five hits in the bottom half of the sixth frame to take the lead for good (5-3). Tommy Scala hit a solo homerun to left field to start off the at-bat and then Jacob Rand hit a single to right field to plate Andy Runion and Dalton Eisenbath.
The Tornados scored their final run in the ninth inning on a bases loaded walk. Bailey Christie was brought in to pitch with two outs and got Donaldson to pop out to Eisenbath at first base for the game ending out.
The teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow with a double-header at 12 p.m.
