Solid Pitching & Defense Lead to Win at Newberry
The Lions’ baseball team defeated Newberry College 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday night.
NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Lions' baseball team defeated Newberry College 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday night. Mars Hill improved to 3-5 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. The Wolves fell to 6-2 on the season and 2-2 in the league.
Caleb Edwards threw seven innings scattering six hits allowing no earned runs to pick up his second conference win of the season. He struck out his career high nine batters in the victory. Hunter Boydston threw the final two innings allowing no hits and striking out one batter to pick up his first save on the season. Evan Rogers led MHU at the plate going 2-5 with a double and two runs scored. David King and Andy Runion also posted a pair of hits in the win. King, Phillip Carroll and Dalton Eisenbath had an RBI in the contest.
Nolan Schrenker led Newberry going 2-4 at the plate with a run scored. Cole Cromer suffered the loss (1-1) for the Wolves on the mound.
Mars Hill scored their first run of the game in the top of the third inning when David King singled through the left side to plate Evan Rogers. With one out in the at-bat, Rogers doubled down the left field line to get into scoring position.
A bunt by Brandon Sheridan scored Nolan Schrenker to tie the contest at 1-all in the bottom of the sixth frame. Schrenker singled to right field to lead off the inning. That was all the offense the Lions would allow the Wolves in the game.
After Rogers singled up the middle to lead off the eighth inning, he advanced to second on a wild pitch. Phillip Carroll hit a ball through the right side of the infield to plate Rogers for what would later prove to be the game winning run. A sacrifice fly by Eisenbath drove in Carroll to make the final tally 3-1 in favor of the Lions.
The teams will complete the three-game series tomorrow with a double-header at the Smith Road Complex beginning at 1 p.m.
