Baseball Splits at Brevard
Mars Hill’s baseball team split a non-conference double-header at Brevard Tuesday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.
BREVARD, N.C. – Mars Hill's baseball team split a non-conference double-header at Brevard Tuesday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. The Lions took their season record to 5-7 while the Tornados are now 4-4 on the season.
Game 1: MHU 7, Brevard 4
Evan Rogers went 3-4 with a run scored while David King and Jacob Rand went 2-4 at the plate to pace the Lions offensively. King added a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Adam Daniel was 1-3 with a triple and a run scored. Bailey Christie picked up his first career win as a Lion on the mound pitching 1.2 innings in relief.
Aaron Goforth and Tyler Tant led the Tornados at the plate with two hits apiece. Tant tallied two runs scored while Chip Helton went 1-2 with a pair of RBI. Blain Hooks took the loss (0-1) for Brevard on the mound.
The Tornados jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning on three hits and one Lion error. Kody Spencer accounted for two of the three runs in the at-bat.
The Lions answered scoring three runs of their own in the fourth inning on the same number of hits. King had an RBI triple in the inning and Dalton Eisenbath added a RBI-double to centerfield. Eisenbath would later score on a single by Rand.
In the fifth frame, Alex Zachary scored on a wild pitch and then Rogers crossed the plate on a fielder's choice to score what would later prove to be the game winning run. Brevard scored their final run in the bottom of the fifth when Helton drove in Tant on a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Lions.
MHU added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning with two outs on the board. Caleb Harbin crossed the plate on a bases loaded walk and Daniel scored on a Brevard miscue to make the final tally 7-4.
Game 2: Brevard 5, Mars Hill 2
Phillip Carroll and Dalton Eisenbath led MHU at the plate in game two going 2-3 in their at-bats. Eisenbath had a homerun and two RBI in the loss. Alan Kolb took the loss (0-1) for the Lions on the mound. Brock Helton, Eric Renegar and Brayden Morris posted two hits apiece to lead the Tornados offense. Ryan Mercer picked up the win (1-0) on the hill for Brevard in relief.
Brevard led 3-0 going into the fourth inning before the Lions got on the board when Andy Runion scored off an infield single by Eisenbath. Brevard answered scoring single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to lead 5-1. A solo homerun to left field by Eisenbath ended the scoring and made the final score 5-2 in favor of the hosts.
Mars Hill will play a three-game SAC series at Coker College this weekend. The teams will meet for a single game on Friday at 2 p.m. and then play a double-header at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
