Men's Soccer Loses Marathon Match Against Newberry
The Lions’ men’s soccer squad lost their South Atlantic Conference season opener to Newberry 2-1 in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. There was over a two-hour lightening delay in the first half.

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' men's soccer squad lost their South Atlantic Conference season opener to Newberry 2-1 in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. There was over a two-hour lightening delay in the first half. Mars Hill fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the league. Newberry improved to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in the SAC.
At the 17:21 mark of the first half, a two hour and 24-minute lightening delay halted play from 7:55 p.m. until 10:19 p.m. Paul Marie scored on a breakaway off a lead pass from Dillion Pelton at the 38:04 mark. Twenty seconds later, Jack Donaldson knotted the match at 1-all hitting the back of the net from around 35 yards out. The teams took that score into the intermission. MHU outshot the Wolves 18-5 in the first frame.
Mario Stajkoski intercepted a MHU goalie clear and kicked the ball 40 yards that sailed just over the Lions' keeper to score the match winner at the 75:41 mark. The goal was unassisted.
The Lions outshot the Wolves 37-8 in the match and had seven corner kicks to none for Newberry. Oliver Pannell played all 90 minutes in the net for MHU and made two saves. Nick Lucido also played the entire match in goal for the Wolves and made 14 saves.
Mars Hill will play at Lees-McRae on Wednesday, September 17. Match time is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
