Mullen, Lions Work Extra to Defeat Brevard
Alex Mullen’s golden goal with just under seven minutes to play in the second overtime period gave Mars Hill a 2-1 victory over Brevard on Saturday afternoon.

BREVARD, N.C.- Alex Mullen's golden goal with just under seven minutes to play in the second overtime period gave Mars Hill a 2-1 victory over Brevard on Saturday afternoon. Mars Hill improved to 8-6 overall and 8-2 in South Atlantic Conference action while Brevard dropped to 4-11-1 and 2-8.
Mullen scored his team-leading seventh goal of 2014 after receiving a pass from Thomaz Freitas in the boss and beating Tornado goalkeeper Heath Turner to give the Lions their third consecutive victory.
Brevard to a 1-0 lead in 25th minute on Daniel Wheldon's second goal of 2014 with an assist from Ryan McPhillips. Mars Hill forced overtime thanks to a Jack Donaldson tally in the 85th minute. Donaldson headed in a Freitas free kick that hit the crossbar to tie the match.
Mars Hill outshot Brevard 20-9 and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Oliver Pannell made one save on two shots for his fifth win of the season, while Turner made three saves on five shots.
The Lions wrap up the 2014 regular season on Halloween night at 7:30 p.m. against Catawba. Friday night's match against the Indians will also serve as Senior Night.
