Men's Soccer Shuts Out Lenoir-Rhyne

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' men's soccer squad defeated Lenoir-Rhyne, 2-0 Wednesday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill improved to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the league. The Bears fell to 3-6-2 on the season and an even 3-3 in the SAC.
A little over four minutes into the match, Thomaz Freitas scored on a free kick from about 20 yards out. That was all scoring the match would see. The Lions out shot the Bears 8-5 in the first frame.
Alex Mullen added an insurance goal with just five seconds left in the contest. He stole the ball at midfield and beat the keeper on a breakaway shot from about 25 yards out.
Shots in the match were knotted at 14-all. MHU edged the Bears in corner kicks, 7-5. There were 11 offsides penalties called in the contest. Mars Hill had seven while L-R had four. Oliver Pannell played all 90 minutes in goal for the Lions and made six saves. Jorge Hernandez also played the entire match in the net for the Bears and made four saves.
Mars Hill will play at Coker on Saturday. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
