MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (3-1) was defeated by North Greenville (2-1) by a score of 2-1 in their home opener Saturday afternoon.
Mars Hill struck early as David Straube scored his second of the season in the sixth minute of play. The Crusaders knotted the game at one in the 25th minute from a Carlos Navarro shot as he recorded his first goal of the season.
In the 51st minute of play, North Greenville's Reda Ikarrain broke the tie with his second goal of the season, proving to be the game-winning tally.
North Greenville outshot the Lions 11-10 including an 8-5 advantage in the second half of play. Michel Weber made three saves for the win while Brennan Whalen stopped three shots in the losing effort.
The Lions open up South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday, September 7 when they take to the road to face Newberry. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
