MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (5-1-2, 2-0-1 SAC) defeated Lenoir-Rhyne (6-2-1, 3-2-0 SAC) by a score of 1-0 Saturday afternoon inside Meares Stadium.
A scoreless first half saw the Bears outshoot Mars Hill 4-3. An explosive second half saw the teams combine for 21 total shots with Lenoir-Rhyne having the 11-10 advantage.
In the 59th minute, a two-on-one Mars Hill rush was converted as Jorge Perez Prada netted his third of the season and the game-winning marker. Peter Plougmand launched a shot towards Juan Basabe that the senior goalkeeper could not contain. Perez Prada picked up the loose ball and dribbled it into the yawning cage for the Lions' lone marker.
Plougmand, who led all players with seven shots, five on target, had two great opportunities to extend the lead further, but Basabe came up with clutch saves for the Bears in the waning minutes of the second half.
The Bears came into the contest sitting atop the SAC, tied with Catawba with nine points. Mars Hill, with their second straight win, have earned their seventh point in conference.
Mars Hill hits the road for two games when they take on Carson-Newman on Wednesday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. Next Saturday, the Lions will take on Catawba.
