Women’s Soccer Wins on Senior Night
Lions shutout Wolves
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions' women's soccer team defeated SAC rival Newberry College 2-0 on Senior Night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill improved to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in the SAC. The Wolves fell to 4-6-3 on the season and 1-4-2 in the conference.
Before the contest, Hallie Barry, Chelsea Parker, Corrine Roberts and Cara Woolford were recognized as the Lions four senior players on the 2012 squad.
Less than two minutes into the match (1:36), Leah Taylor scored on a cross from Alyssa Morris to put the Lions ahead, 1-0. Grace Lancaster gave the Lions a 2-0 advantage at the 26:37 mark scoring off a corner kick sent in by Morris. The teams carried that score into the locker room at the intermission.
Mars Hill's defense held strong in the second half of play as they held the Wolves scoreless the remainder of the match. Newberry outshot the Lions, 18-15 and edged MHC in corner kicks, 6-4. Chelsea Parker played 87:55 in goal for the Lions and made seven saves. Corrine Roberts played the final 2:05 in the net for MHC. Rebecca Darley played the entire contest in goal for the Wolves and also made seven saves.
Mars Hill will host Mount Olive College on October 17. The match is slated to start at 5 p.m.
