Lions Partner with Local Organizations to Serve Community
MARS HILL, N.C.- This past Saturday, the women's soccer team participated in a community service outreach project with Love Loud at the Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministries (ABCCM) Thrift Store and warehouse.
The team volunteered their time to be a part of the Love Loud outreach program. The women's soccer team helped to organize and clean up the ABCCM warehouse and Thrift Store. The team members helped to organize clothing donated to the Thrift Store and clean out some of its warehouse space. Most of the day was spent organizing clothing into categories according to gender and size.
"This was a great opportunity for our team members to give back to the community," said head coach Ken Miller. "It was a great experience and hopefully a small gesture to support the great work that Biltmore Baptist Church and ABCCM do for the community."
"I hope this community service project inspires our team members to always be thankful of their opportunities to attend a college/university and have a willingness to want to give back to help others."
Love Loud is a community outreach project organized by Biltmore Baptist Church. Each spring, the Love Loud outreach project allows church members to partner with community members to provide volunteer support serving Asheville and the surrounding areas.
"Although we were only able to work a few hours, spending some of our time giving back to the community was an amazing and rewarding experience," said sophomore McKay Sharpe.
Examples of outreach projects include spring planting at local schools, painting local businesses and schools, donation of school supplies to local school children, the clean-up of schools and businesses, building of homes, construction-site clean-up and other various projects.
"Volunteering was an awesome opportunity to give back to the community," said sophomore Catherine Watkins-Banks. "Being able to do it with my team made it even better!"
The ABCCM Thrift Store is an important asset to the community, offering families a way to purchase what they need at a steep discount. ABCCM turns donated items into important financial resources to support ministry activities such as heating assistance, prescription medications and food.
Items offered for sale in the Thrift Store are those remaining after stocking Crisis Ministry and Homeless Ministry sites or items more appropriate for sale to the general public. ABCCM is located at 217 Coxe Ave. in Asheville.
