Women's Basketball Falls at Carson-Newman
The Mars Hill women’s basketball team lost 80-69 at Carson-Newman on Tuesday.
JEFFERSON CITY, TENN.- The Mars Hill women's basketball team lost 80-69 at Carson-Newman on Tuesday night in South Atlantic Conference basketball action. Carson-Newman improves to 5-0 and 3-0 in league play while Mars Hill falls to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Camille Glymph led the Lions with 19 points, followed by Paige Chavis with 15 points, Genice Lane with 12 points and Cadence Wilmoth with 10 points. Lane pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, with 10 of them coming on defense.
Tatum Burstrom scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Eagles, followed by 15 from Whitney Kyle and 14 from Jessica Simerly. Kaitlyn Cupples had 10 rebounds for Carson-Newman.
After Chavis sank a 3-pointer 23 seconds into the game, the Eagles pulled ahead to a 22-10 lead at the midway point of the opening half. Carson-Newman led by as many as 27, 40-13, with 5:11 to play in the half before the Lions finished the frame on a 12-2 run as the hosts lead 42-25 at halftime.
Trailing 58-41 with 12:33 to play, the Lions went on a 16-8 run to pull within 11 points, 66-55, with 6:30 remaining following a Kelsey Espinosa free throw. A Glymph 3-pointer pulled the Lions to within eight points, 77-69, with 1:50 to play, but the Lions got no closer the rest of the way.
Carson-Newman outshot Mars Hill 47.8 percent to 38.2 percent and scored 25 points off of 22 Lion turnovers. Mars Hill converted 17 Eagle turnovers into 19 points.
Mars Hill returns to action on Monday at Young Harris. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
