Women's Basketball Earns Road Win Over Tusculum
The Mars Hill women’s basketball finished the first half on a 20-5 run while tying their season high with 21 forced turnovers as the Lions defeated Tusculum 78-62.
GREENEVILLE, TENN. - The Mars Hill women's basketball finished the first half on a 20-5 run while tying their season high with 21 forced turnovers as the Lions defeated Tusculum 78-62 in Pioneer Arena on Wednesday. Mars Hill improves to 7-11 overall and 5-8 in the league while Tusculum drops to 4-12 overall and 4-9 in league play.
Camille Glymph led the Lions with 27 points, followed by Paige Chavis with 14 points and Kelsey Espinosa with 13 points. Sydney Comer and Raven Brown each scored eight points. Espinosa posted a double-double as she led the Lions with 14 rebounds. Glymph and Brown each finished with nine boards.
Tusculum was led by Shynese Whitener with 18 points. Blakeley Burleson, Maelyn Cutshaw and Rainey Story each scored 13 points. Cutshaw had a game-high six assists.
Tusculum pulled out to a 7-2 lead before the Lions pulled to within a point, 9-8, with 13:18 to play in the first half. The Pioneers pushed their lead back to five, 20-15, following a Story old-fashioned three-point play before the Lions evened the contest at 20 thanks to a Comer 3-pointer and a pair of Brown free throws with 8:01 remaining. Mars Hill went on a 20-5 run to close the half with a 40-25 lead.
Tusculum opened the second half on a 12-2 run to pull within five, 42-37, with just under 16 minutes to play. A Chavis 3-pointer with 12:32 to play pushed the lead back to double digits before a Comer layup restored the 15 point advantage, 59-44, with 11:25 remaining. A pair of buckets from Story pulled the Pioneers back to within 11 (59-48) with just over 10 minutes remaining before a Glymph jumper gave Mars Hill a game-high 17 point lead (69-52) with 5:54 remaining. Tusculum cut the Lion lead to 10, 71-61, following a Whitener 3-pointer with 2:26 to play but would get no closer as the Lions finished the game on a 7-1 run.
Mars Hill converted 21 Tusculum turnovers into 23 points and held a 47-36 advantage on the glass. The Lions outshot Tusculum 39.7 percent to 34.4 percent and made 22 of 25 free throw attempts.
Mars Hill travels to Wingate on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest.
