Newberry Holds Off Women's Basketball
A late rally by the Mars Hill women’s basketball team fell short as the Lions lost 72-63 at Newberry
NEWBERRY, S.C. - A late rally by the Mars Hill women's basketball team fell short as the Lions lost 72-63 at Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday. Mars Hill falls to 9-15 overall and 7-12 in the league while Newberry improves to 18-8 and 14-6.
Camille Glymph scored 20 points to lead the Lions, followed by 13 points each from Paige Chavis and Genice Lane. Kelsey Espinosa added 11 points. Lane finished just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds.
Samantha Creed scored 23 points, followed by Colleen Leung with 12 and Haylee Lepaio to lead Newberry. Lepaio pulled down nine rebounds, seven defensive, to lead the Wolves.
An Espinosa jumper gave the Lions a 2-0 lead just over a minute into the game before Newberry took a 9-2 lead at the 14:35 mark. A pair of 3-pointers from Glymph and Chavis along with a Lane jumper pulled Mars Hill to within one, 11-10, but the Wolves answered with a 9-2 run for a 20-12 lead at the under-eight media timeout. After Mars Hill pulled to with three (20-17) with 5:26 to play, Newberry pushed their advantage to a half-high eight points, 27-19, with 1:47 to play in the frame. The Lions got a layup from Glymph and 3-pointer from Chavis to pull within three at halftime, 27-24.
A Glymph 3-pointer an Espinosa free throw brought Mars Hill to within one, 29-28, with 17:29 to play. Newberry led by eight, 40-32, with just under 14 minutes left before a Cadence Wilmoth layup brought Mars Hill to within six, 42-36, with 12:31 left. Newberry would enjoy a double-digit lead for the first time in the contest with 48-38 advantage with just under 10 minutes to play before a pair of Chavis free throws brought the Lions back to within six, 48-42, with 9:15 to go.
The Wolves responded with a 14-4 run for a 60-46 lead with 5:46 remaining. Mars Hill didn't quit, pulling to within four (67-63) following a Glymph triple with 40 seconds remaining. Newberry would sink five of six free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Mars Hill hosts Tusculum in Stanford Arena on Monday night at 6 p.m. in a rescheduled contest from Wednesday.
