Women's Basketball Loses at Brevard
The Mars Hill women’s basketball team lost 80-63 to Brevard.
BREVARD, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team lost 80-63 to Brevard in South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday evening in Boshamer Gymnasium. Mars Hill falls to 7-13 overall and 5-10 in the league while Brevard improves to 5-13 and 4-11.
Camille Glymph led Mars Hill with 18 points. Cadence Wilmoth and Genice Lane each scored eight points. Wilmoth pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Katie Williams led Brevard with 24 points. Madison Lennox scored 17 points, followed by Hadara Bannister with 10. Shelby Wolfe led the hosts with five rebounds.
Mars Hill opened the game on a 10-2 run before a Shelby Wolfe free throw brought the Tornados to within a pair, 15-13, with 11:33 to play in the first half. The Lions answered with a Sydney Comer jumper and layup to push their lead back to six, 19-13, with just over 10 minutes to go. A Lennox layup brought the Tornados to within a pair before Wolfe gave Brevard a 27-26 lead with 6:55 remaining in the first half. Wilmoth answered for the Lions with a bucket as the teams had two ties and two lead changes before a Williams 3-pointer gave Brevard a 34-31 advantage. The Tornados led 41-35 at halftime. Brevard shot 56 percent in the first half and made six of nine 3-point attempts while the Lions shot 53.6 percent in the opening frame.
An Espinosa layup brought the Lions to within a point, 43-42, with just over 17 minutes to play in the game. The Lions and Tornados traded baskets for the next seven minutes as the Lion deficit fluctuated between two and six points. Consecutive 3-pointers by Williams and Bannister gave the Tornados a 60-52 lead with 8:53 to play. A Williams layup with 7:53 remaining gave Brevard a 64-54 lead as the hosts outscored Mars Hill 16-9 down the stretch.
Mars Hill committed 17 turnovers resulting in 18 Brevard points while Brevard had 11 turnovers. Twelve of the Lions' 17 turnovers came in the first half. Brevard outshot Mars Hill 44.2 percent to 42.4 percent and went 8-for-16 behind the 3-point arc.
