Mars Hill defeats SWU at SAC/CC Challenge

BELMONT, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-1) defeated Southern Wesleyan (0-2) by a score of 72-58 Saturday afternoon.
Mars Hill edged the Warriors 19-18 in the first quarter as the duo of Jaquoria Rucker and Maddie Gillie scored six apiece. The Lions dominated the boards, outrebounding Southern Wesleyan 15-3 with the trio of Tateyoina Harris, Halei Gillis, and Janette Hanni each pulling down three.
The Lions' offense took control in the second, outscoring the Warriors 20-7. Elyseia Brown led all players with seven points in the quarter. Once again, the Lions' defense stood tall, outrebounding Southern Wesleyan 16-11 and forcing them to shoot just 11 percent in the frame.
In the third, Mars Hill outscored the Warriors 23-13 with Brown once again leading all players with seven points followed by six from Gillie. Ana Baptista led all players with five rebounds in the third.
Despite Southern Wesleyan outscoring Mars Hill 20-10 in the fourth, the Lions' large lead held firm en route to their first win of the season.
Gillie led all players with 21 points, hitting seven three-pointers on the night. Brown ended the contest with 14 points. Harris led all players with 12 rebounds, adding nine points.
The Lions open up a six-game homestand on Wednesday, November 15 when they host Lees-McRae. Tipoff inside Chambers Gymnasium is slated for 5:30 p.m.
