MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (2-4) was defeated by Lander (5-2) by a score of 61-42 Wednesday night.
Tied at 28 at the half, Lander outscored the Lions 18-5 in the third to pull away with a 46-33 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes of play. Wykira Johnson-Kelly led all players with seven points as the Bearcats shot 50 percent from the floor.
The Bearcats held the Lions to single digits again in the fourth, outscoring Mars Hill 15-9 in the final frame.
Maddie Gillie led the Lions with six points in the first quarter as they entered the second quarter trailing 16-14. Mars Hill outscored Lander in the second, 14-12, as Jo Snow led the team with five points while Tateyoina Harris added four points. The Lions hit 40 percent of their shots in the frame, tying it at 28 entering the half.
Johnson-Kelly led all players with 15 points, adding a team-high six rebounds. Gillie led the Lions with 12 points and added six rebounds. The duo of Harris and Snow added eight points while Elyseia Brown led the Lions with eight rebounds.
Mars Hill returns to the floor on Saturday, December 2 when they host Young Harris. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
