Lions defeat P.R. Bayamon in Puerto Rico Classic

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (5-6) opened the Puerto Rico Classic with a 66-61 win over P.R. Bayamon (0-4) Saturday afternoon.
Bayamon led the Lions 24-20 after the first with Abeliz Rodriguez netting a quarter-high nine points. Kineysha Mercado added eight points. The team hit nearly 60 percent of their shots from the floor. Elyseia Brown led the Lions with six points.
Mars Hill dominated the second quarter, outscoring the opponents 19-8 with Maddie Gillie recording 13 points to lead all players. She hit 5-of-6 shots from the floor and went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. The team hit just over 58 percent of shots in the frame as they carried a 39-32 lead into the half.
Rodriguez led all players with nine points in the third while Tateyoina Harris led the Lions with seven points and six rebounds in the third. Mars Hill outscored Bayamon 15-14 in the frame.
Rodriguez once again led all players in the fourth quarter, scoring five points as Bayamon outscored Mars Hill 15-12, ultimately falling short in their comeback bid.
Gillie led all players with a season-high 24 points, shooting 9-of-14 on the day, hitting six threes. Harris added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the double-double. Jo Snow led all players with six assists.
The Lions wrap up the Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday, December 17 when they face P.R. Mayaguez. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. EST.
