Mars Hill downs LMC in home opener

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (2-1) defeated Lees-McRae (0-1) by a score of 67-49 Wednesday night inside Chambers Gymnasium.
The Lions led 13-10 after 10 minutes of play, but extended their lead to seven at the end of the second quarter. Maddie Gillie led the Lions with five points in the frame followed by four from Halei Gillis.
Mars Hill came out in the third, hitting 43 percent of their shots, outscoring Lees-McRae 22-15. Janette Hanni led all players with seven points followed by five from Gillie. Jaquoria Rucker led all players with four assists.
Hanni led all players in the fourth as well, netting six points. Mars Hill went 7-of-8 from the floor and dominated defensively, holding the Bobcats to 1-of-11 from the floor and pulling down seven rebounds.
Gillis led all players with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Hanni followed with 15 points while Gillie added 12 points. Rucker led all players with six assists, adding six rebounds.
Mars Hill hit 45 percent of their shots and outrebounded Lees-McRae 46-32 on the night.
The Lions roll on in their six-game homestand on Saturday, November 18 when they host Bluefield State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Chambers Gymnasium.
