Lions felled by Bluefield State
The Mars Hill women’s basketball team (2-2) was defeated by Bluefield State (1-1) by a score of 59-48 Saturday afternoon.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's basketball team (2-2) was defeated by Bluefield State (1-1) by a score of 59-48 Saturday afternoon.
In the first, the Big Blue shot 40 percent from the floor, carrying an 18-12 lead into the second quarter. Jayla Sample led the Big Blue with six points while Alexyss Newman led all players with six rebounds. Janette Hanni led the Lions with five points while Halei Gillis led the team with five rebounds. Jaquoria Rucker led all players with three assists.
The Lions outscored Bluefield State 11-7 in the second, with Landyn Stewart's four points leading the way. Hanni added two assists while the trio of Gillis, Hanni, and Elyseia Brown had two rebounds apiece.
Bluefield State began to pull away in the third, outscoring Mars Hill 20-17. Sample led all players with nine points Brown and Maddie Gillie led the Lions with six points apiece.
Newman and Katrina Davis netted five points apiece in the fourth to cement the Big Blues' first win of the year.
Sample led all players with 17 points followed by 12 from Azariah Binford. Newman led all players with 10 rebounds.
Gillie led the Lions with 12 points. Brown added eight points and a team-high six rebounds. Rucker led the team with six assists.
Mars Hill returns to action on Saturday, November 25 when they face Mount Olive. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Chambers Gymnasium.
