Lions split doubleheader with St. Leo
The Mars Hill baseball team (1-2) split versus St. Leo (2-1) on Saturday, dropping game one by a score of 16-5, but responding with an extra innings 7-6 win in game two.
ST. LEO, Fla. - The Mars Hill baseball team (1-2) split versus St. Leo (2-1) on Saturday, dropping game one by a score of 16-5, but responding with an extra innings 7-6 win in game two.
GAME ONE: SLU 16, MHU 5
St. Leo used a six-run first inning to help propel them to their second win of the season. Bobby Sparling opened the scoring with a two-run single. Paul Coumoulos and Eddie Nieman each added RBI singles in the inning. They tacked on three more runs in the second highlighted by Sparling's RBI double.
In the top of the third, Mars Hill got on the board, scoring four runs. Scottie Lee's RBI double broke the shutout bid and was followed up later in the inning by Trey Putnam's two-run single. Zach Weaver plated Putnam for the fourth run of the inning with a RBI single.
Sam Crail increased the lead back to eight with a three-run home run in the bottom of the frame. The Lions would add three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and tack on one more run in the fifth, going up 16-4 entering the sixth inning.
Crail and Dylan McDonald led all players with three hits while Crail, Sparling, and Nieman each collected three RBI. Weaver led Mars Hill with two hits while Putnam drove in two.
Dariel Fregio earned the win, allowing four runs on six hits in five innings. AJ Chacon suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on six hits in one inning.
GAME TWO: MHU 7, SLU 6 (10 Innings)
Mars Hill earned their first win of the season in extras, defeating St. Leo 7-6 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
In the top of the tenth, Alex Naran's RBI single that plated Tanner Hodgson proved to be the game-winning run.
Giusepe Arcuri opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a RBI fielder's choice that scored Tyler Trovinger. Mars Hill, in the top of the third, took a 3-1 lead highlighted by Ruben Trillo's two-run home run.
Arcuri struck again in the bottom of the fourth, pulling St. Leo within one with a RBI single. After adding two more runs to their lead in the top of the fifth, Mars Hill saw the Lions claw their way back into the contest in the bottom half of the frame.
Following a run scored on a passed ball, Paul Coumoulos pulled St. Leo within one with a RBI double. Mike Wyman's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh tied the game at five.
Chapel Matson's RBI single in the top of the eighth gave Mars Hill the lead once again, however, in the bottom of the ninth, Eddie Nieman's sacrifice fly to right field allowed Crail to score the tying run.
Each team had a trio of players with two hits. For St. Leo, Crail, Coumoulos, and Bobby Sparling and for Mars Hill, Trillo, Matson, and Paul Martin. Arcuri and Trillo led their respective teams with two RBI.
Sam Kaplan earned the win, allowing one run on two hits and striking out two in two innings of work. Dylan Broderick was credited with the loss, allowing one run on two hits in two innings.
The team will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday, February 6. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
