Huskies hold off Lions' comeback bid
Late comeback efforts came up just short as the Mars Hill baseball team (16-25, 9-11 SAC) fell to Bloomsburg (PA) (20-12-1) by a score of 11-10 on Thursday afternoon in the first part of a three-game non-conference series.
MARS HILL, N.C. – Late comeback efforts came up just short as the Mars Hill baseball team (16-25, 9-11 SAC) fell to Bloomsburg (PA) (20-12-1) by a score of 11-10 on Thursday afternoon in the first part of a three-game non-conference series.
The Lions opened the scoring in the first inning from a sacrifice fly by Zach Weaver and a Jordan Lathe line drive into center field. The Lions would tack on another in the second to stretch the lead to three.
The Huskies responded, scoring nine runs over the next two innings, six of which coming from three home runs. The Huskies would stretch the lead to 11-4, the largest of the game, until the Lions began to chip away in the sixth, scoring two runs.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Lions were able to manufacture four runs, due in part by a Scottie Lee double off the left center wall that scored Trey Putnam and Weaver, however came up one run short.
Sam Kaplan started the game for the Lions, striking out three batters through 3.1 innings, and was given the loss. Bloomsburg's Michael Stranden entered in relief and earned the win, while Matt Vernieri closed the game and earned the save.
Games two and three are scheduled for tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Don Henderson Field.
Prior to the games tomorrow, at 10:15 am, the Lions will celebrate Senior Day by recognizing the ten Lion senior members of the team.
