DUE WEST, SC – The Mars Hill baseball team (2-8) was unable to hold off the Flying Fleet of Erskine (6-2) on Tuesday afternoon and fell by a score of 13-12.
After Erskine jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, the Lions' offense bounced back by scoring six runs in the top of the third inning due to a pair of RBI doubles by Ruben Trillo and Kyle Jenkins, followed by a pair of solo home runs by Tyler Lala and Jenkins in the top of the fourth, bringing the Lions' lead to 9-4 heading into the fifth.
The Flying Fleet would respond by putting up six of their own in the bottom half of the sixth due to a three-run error by the Lions and a three-run homerun by Cal Bocchino. The Lions didn't shy away and responded by scoring two quick runs: a Jordan Lathe solo homer in the top of the sixth to tie the game, and a go-ahead run by Zach Weaver on a passed ball.
In the bottom of the ninth with two outs in a tie game, Christian Rivera walked on a ball in the dirt in which Bocchino advanced to third, and ultimately was able to score the game-winning run on a Lions' error.
Erskine's Ira Clifton was awarded the win after striking out two through one inning, with Luke Kimrey taking the loss for the Lions after throwing 2/3 of an inning. The Lions play host to Augusta at Henderson Field on Friday, February 18th at 2 p.m.
