
Lions win home opener over Belmont Abbey
The Mars Hill baseball team (2-4) defeated Belmont Abbey (4-1) by a score of 16-11 in a midweek matchup on Wednesday afternoon.

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill baseball team (2-4) defeated Belmont Abbey (4-1) by a score of 16-11 in a midweek matchup on Wednesday afternoon.
The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the top of the third thanks to a Brennan Martin home run, followed by a pair of doubles by Ben Ferguson and Zach Aehlert. The Lions responded by scoring three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The Lions' offense exploded from that point forth, putting up a total of 16 runs.
Zach Weaver accounted for five of the Lions' runs, three of which came from a home run hit in the bottom half of the fourth. Tyler Lala also homered on the day. Spencer Nifong entered the game in relief and was awarded the win after allowing only a single hit through two innings.
The Lions go on the road this weekend to take on the Nighthawks of North Georgia. First pitch of the three-game series is set for Friday afternoon at 3:00 PM.
