Lions complete series sweep of Augusta
The Mars Hill baseball team (5-8) was able to complete the sweep in the weekend series against Augusta University (5-6) on Saturday afternoon at Don Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill baseball team (5-8) was able to complete the sweep in the weekend series against Augusta University (5-6) on Saturday afternoon at Don Henderson Field.
GAME ONE: MHU 17, AU 11
The Lions took game one of Saturday's double header by a score of 17-11.
Following a sacrifice fly of the bat of Ben Markiewicz in the top of the first to plate Mason Robertson, Tyler Lala responded for the Lions by hitting a two-run double off the center field wall to plate Zach Weaver and Alex Naran. After going down 5-2 heading into the bottom half of the second inning, Lala would come up to the plate and drive in another two runs with a double into left center field to score Naran and Chapel Matson. The Lions would go on to score of total of six runs in the inning.
With an 11-6 lead after four and a half innings of play, the Lions would rally to another six-run inning to bring their lead to 17-6 thanks to a Lala homer, a two RBI single by Naran, and a sacrifice fly from Weaver.
Connor Presnell entered the game for the Lions in relief of starter AJ Chacon and would be awarded the win, going 3.1 innings, striking out three and only allowing a single run. Dominique Canale was given the loss.
GAME TWO: MHU 5, AU 3
The Lions took the third and final game of the series by a score of 5-3.
Mars Hill's offense got off to an early start in the second game of the day, putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the second. A Chad Sikes single would score Kyle Jenkins, a Scottie Lee single would score Sikes, and an Alex Naran single would score Chapel Matson.
In the bottom of the third, Jenkins singled down the right field line to plate Ruben Trillo to bring the Lions' lead to three.
In the top of the seventh, the Jaguars were able to put two runs on the board to narrow the lead until Tyler Lala would hit his second homer of the day, a towering bomb high over the left field wall to essentially put the game out of reach.
Barrett Williams started the game on the hill for the Lions and threw six complete innings, only allowing a single run on three hits and earned his first win of the season. Augusta's Chase Horton received the loss after allowing eleven hits and four runs through six innings. Sam Kaplan took the bump for the Lions in the ninth, retiring the only three batters he faced, earning himself the save.
The Lions take to the road next weekend where the will play a three game series against the Saints of Limestone. First pitch is set for Friday, February 25th at 5:00 PM.
