Lions down Railsplitters for first win of season
The Mars Hill women’s basketball team (1-8, 1-6 SAC) defeated Lincoln Memorial (4-5, 2-4 SAC) for their first win of the season by a score of 61-59 Saturday afternoon.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-8, 1-6 SAC) defeated Lincoln Memorial (4-5, 2-4 SAC) for their first win of the season by a score of 61-59 Saturday afternoon.
Led in the second half by Porcelain Goldsborough and Maddie Gillie, the Lions were able to hold off the Railsplitters in the final seconds and pick up their first win of the season.
A late Railsplitters foul committed on Zanah Boyd sent the senior to the free throw line tied at 59 with under eight seconds to play. Boyd hit both shots, capping off a 6-for-6 performance from the line to seal the deal.
Mars Hill shot a game-high 58 percent from the floor in the third quarter, hitting both three-point attempts, both taken by Goldsborough.
The teams battled back-and-forth in the first half with Lincoln Memorial carrying a 32-31 lead into the half. Mars Hill shot 39 percent from the floor and hit three of their five three-point attempts in the half. The Railsplitters hit eight of their 23 attempts from behind the arc and shot just over 36 percent from the floor.
Gillie led all players after 20 minutes of play with 14 points followed by Lindsay Proffitt's 11 for Lincoln Memorial.
The Lions went 17-19 from the free throw line to the Railsplitters' 1-of-4. Mars Hill also outrebounded Lincoln Memorial 35-32 with De'Ja Marshall's 10 leading all players.
