Mars Hill felled by Carson-Newman
The Mars Hill women’s basketball team (1-22, 1-20 SAC) was defeated by Carson-Newman (20-5, 17-4 SAC) by a score of 74-47 Wednesday night.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-22, 1-20 SAC) was defeated by Carson-Newman (20-5, 17-4 SAC) by a score of 74-47 Wednesday night.
The Lions led 17-12 after the first quarter, playing stellar defense and forcing the Eagles to shoot under 31 percent in the frame. Mars Hill shot just under 47 percent over the first 10 minutes of play.
Carson-Newman came back in the second quarter to outscore the Lions 24-15 and hit 50 percent of their shots. Braelyn Wykle led the Eagles with 11 points and four steals. Maddie Gillie led all players with 13 points followed by De'Ja Marshall's seven.
Both teams combined for 24 turnovers in the first half.
The Eagles potted 19 points in both the third and fourth quarters and held the Lions to nine and six, respectively in the second half of play. Mars Hill shot just over 20 percent in both the third and fourth quarters.
Wykle led all players with 16 points followed by 10 points apiece from Lindsey Taylor and Addison Byrd. Both Gillie and Marshall netted 15 points.
