Athletic Highlights: September 4 – September 11, 2017
Football: Mars Hill fell to NCAA Division I opponent N.C. A&T 56-0 Saturday night at Aggie Stadium. Turnovers plagued the Lions in the loss as they turned the ball over five times with three fumbles and two interceptions. David Salmon threw for 231 yards completing 22-33 passes. Unfortunately, he was picked off twice. Keshaun Taylor was on the receiving end of six of his passes for 82 yards. Javon Harbison also caught six passes for 49 yards. Jeremy Middleton led the Lions' defense with eight tackles (6 solo). Preston Lockwood and Jerjuan Edwards followed with seven stops apiece. Edwards added a tackle-for-loss. Salmon was named as the AstroTurf SAC's Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Shorter. Salmon led the Lions to their 40-14 victory in the season opener. Salmon threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns against Shorter. He went 17-for-24, completing 70.8 percent of his passes. His longest completion on the afternoon went for 61 yards, while he averaged 10.7 yards per completion.
Men's Soccer: The Lions dropped a heartbreaking home opener against King University Wednesday night to fall to 0-3 on the season. Jumping out to a 2-0 first half lead with goals from Stian Sanner and Jordan Lennon, the Lions were unable to hold on as the Tornado stormed back with three unanswered goals. Sanner's goal in the first half was the Lions' first of the season.
Women's Soccer: Mars Hill went 0-1-1 during the week. They were dominant in their performance against King on Wednesday evening, but were held off the scoresheet for a 0-0 draw. Aleonya Hunter led the Lion offense with seven attempts at net. They followed up their performance losing on the road against Converse College, 3-0. Kaitlyn Danglemaier made five saves in the effort.
Cross Country: The men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, South Carolina over the weekend. Nyla Feeney once again led the Lions on the women's side, running a personal best 25:21.14 in the 6K race. On the men's side, Noah Allison and Nick Resor were the top two finishers for the Lions and led a host of teammates to their personal best times in the 8K. Allison ran a strong 25:47.00 which was 45 seconds better than his previous run on the course last year. Resor posted a time of 27:15.40, a full 1:05 faster than his previous time.
Volleyball: The Lions dropped both of their home conference contests against Lincoln Memorial University and Carson-Newman University. Thursday night saw the Lions push a strong Railsplliters' team to an exciting fifth-set, however, despite Rebecca Butler's team leading 16 kills, were unable to come away with the victory. Saturday afternoon against the Eagles, Sally Anne Johnson posted her fourth straight contest with 11 kills and led the team in that regard. Mars Hill fell in four sets and has dropped their last four matches.
