Athletic Highlights: April 16-April 23, 2018
Baseball: Mars Hill went 1-3 in their final four games of the 2018 season. They defeated Bluefield State in their final home game of the year, 17-4, but dropped all three contests against Lincoln Memorial. On Friday, Mars Hill lost 21-6. On the final day of the season, Lincoln Memorial came away with 13-3 and 5-4 victories to earn the sweep. Harrison Keslar had three RBI against Bluefield State, going 2-for-4 from the plate. Over the three-game span with the Railsplitters, Matt Honeycutt had five hits and two RBI.
Softball: The Lions finished their regular season by earning splits with Wingate and King. On Saturday, the Lions roared back in game one to down Wingate, 5-4, but were held at bay in game two despite a seventh inning comeback bid, falling 4-3. Casey Stanek earned the complete game win and led the team with two RBI in game one. Jordan Harris hit a two-run home run to lead the Lions offensively in game two. Against King, Ashley Evans' solo home run in the sixth inning was the deciding factor as the Lions came away with the 9-8 win. In game two's 10-9 loss, Kayleigh Jonas collected a team-high four RBI, going 1-for-3 from the plate.
Men's Lacrosse: Mars Hill earned their first South Atlantic Conference win of the year and snapped a nine-game losing streak with their 10-9 victory over Newberry Saturday afternoon. Dima Ferreira (3a) and Josh Bryers (2g, 1a) each had a team-high three points. Connor Fernandes, Parker Beaudry and Spencer Andrews each netted two goals.
Women's Lacrosse: The Lions won their first ever South Atlantic Conference game with a 21-11 win over Newberry Saturday evening. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak. Olivia Hokanson scored seven times in the victory to give her 65 goals on the year; second best in the conference. Victoria Eckard (3g, 3a) had six points followed by Molly Tobias' five (3g, 2a).
Women's Golf: The Mars Hill women's golf team placed 11th at the South Atlantic Conference Championships. Janie Gooch was the top finisher for the Lions, placing 48th overall.
Men's Track and Field: The Mars Hill men's track and field team placed eighth at the South Atlantic Conference Championships this past weekend, finishing the two-day meet with 32 points. Spencer Shade placed second in the pole vault. Corey Whaley finished third in the decathlon with a total score of 4,850 while recording a new personal record in the pole vault by 12 inches and 16 second personal record in the 1500 meter race.
Women's Track and Field: The Mars Hill women's track and field team finished eighth at the South Atlantic Conference Championships with 20 points. Shaniqua Stevens finished in sixth place in the triple jump with a personal record of 36'4". Tiffany Holloway placed fourth in shot put with a throw of 40 ft. Cameron Saxon placed seventh in the heptathlon with a personal record of 3,240 points.
