Athletic Highlights: October 15– October 22, 2017
Football: The Lions lost to no. 20 Wingate 42-21 in South Atlantic Conference football action Saturday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Keshaun Taylor led the Lions with 10 catches for 219 yards and two touchdowns. David Salmon threw for 320 yards completing 20-29 passes. Unfortunately, he was picked off twice. Craig Rucker pulled down five passes for 85 yards. Andrew Wilkins led the Lions' defense with 21 tackles (16 solo). Joshua Fernema followed with 15 tackles while Tray Smith added 14 stops. The two teams combined for 999 yards of total offense. Mars Hill accumulated 491 yards of total offense, 390 in the air.
Men's Soccer: Stian Sanner scored in each of the two games the Mars Hill men's soccer team played this past week. The Lions split the contests, coming away with a 1-0 victory on the road against Lincoln Memorial and dropping a heartbreaking double overtime game against Newberry, 3-2. Sanner's late strike in Harrogate, Tenn. with just under two minutes remaining earned the Lions three value points in conference play. Leading 2-1 with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation, Newberry tied the game and would go on to win late in the double overtime frame. The Lions are currently tied for third in the conference.
Women's Soccer: Mars Hill dropped both contests against Lincoln Memorial and Newberry by scores of 3-2 and 4-0, respectively. Two late goals by Leah Hairfield and Aleonya Hunter versus the Railsplitters forced an overtime frame. Early into double overtime, Lincoln Memorial scored the tiebreaking goal to escape with the victory. The Lions were not able to carry over their offensive momentum in Newberry, mustering five shots on goal in the 4-0 loss.
Men's Swimming: The Lions suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Lenoir-Rhyne 146-115 Friday evening. Erwin Ortiz won the 100 and 200 Yard Freestyle events. Regalado won the 200 Yard Butterfly and 1000 Yard Freestyle. They, combined with Brendon Cyprianos and Elijah Sears, won the 200 Yard Medley Relay.
Women's Swimming: The Mars Hill women's swimming team came out victorious against Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday evening, 153-109. Haley Horton and Kathryn Boland won all of their races. Abby Harty won the 200 Yard Freestyle and 100 Yard Breaststroke. Rachel Nichols won the 50 Yard Freestyle. All four Lions won the 200 Yard Medley race. The Lions remain undefeated on the season.
Men's Cross Country: Garrett Farrimond finished 17th overall at the SAC Championships, leading all Mars Hill runners. James Gilreath placed 28th and Noah Allison finished 34th as the Lions repeat bid came to an end. Queens dethroned the Lions as they finished sixth overall as a team.
Women's Cross Country: Nyla Feeney was named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Women's Cross Country Runner of the week heading into the SAC Championships. She was the top finisher for the Lions in the race, finishing 34th overall. The Lions placed 10th as a team. Queens would go on to repeat as champions.
Volleyball: The Lions returned to SAC action on Friday, defeating Catawba in four sets. Lauren Hochstetler's 14 kills were a game-high and moved her closer to the 1,000 career kill mark. Ully Martins led the team in digs with 26 and Abby King had three service aces. Sarah Pasour had 23 assists on the evening. The Lions currently sit in eighth place in the conference.
