Athletic Highlights: October 8 – October 16, 2017
Football: The Lions lost to Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference football action 30-21 Saturday afternoon. David Salmon threw for 367 yards and accounted for all three of the Lions' scores with three passing touchdowns. He completed 26-46 passes and also caught a pass for a 15-yard gain. Keshaun Taylor caught seven passes for 175 yards and one score. Craig Rucker was on the receiving end of 10 passes for 135 yards and pulled in a 55-yard touchdown pass. Chris Leamon led the Lions' defense with a game high 11 tackles (8 solo) and a tackle-for-loss. Aundreas Hill followed with nine tackles (7 solo) while Andrew Wilkins and Earl Adams added eight stops apiece. Adams tallied two tackles-for-loss. Mars Hill accumulated 462 yards of total offense, 382 in the air.
Men's Soccer: The Lions battled to a 1-1 draw against conference foe, Tusculum, Friday evening. The tie earned one point in the conference, enough to tie for third overall in the SAC. Jordan Lennon scored the lone Lions' goal from an assist by Stian Sanner. The Lions currently own a 3-2-2 record in conference play and are 4-5-2 overall.
Women's Soccer: Mars Hill was shutout in both contests against Lander and Tusculum, 1-0 and 3-0, respectively. Aleonya Hunter had four shots over two games and goalkeeper Kaitlyn Danglemaier made 12 saves.
Men's Golf: The Mars Hill men's golf team finished 17th at the South/Southeast Fall Preview in Conover, N.C. Harry Butler was the top finisher for the team, placing 18th overall. The Lions rough start did not allow them to move up the leaderboard throughout Round Two of the tournament. Butler made the highest individual jump in standings, moving up 19 spots. Luke Challis had the highest individual improvement from the first round. After shooting a +95 round, Challis bounced back with a +76, 19 strokes better than Monday's total.
Men's Swimming: The Mars Hill men's swimming team won 10 of 14 events and were victorious over King and Lindsey Wilson at Mars Hill Friday evening. Erwin Ortiz and Angel Regalado won all of their events. Mars Hill came away with a 149-100 win over Lindsey Wilson and a 171-52 victory over King. Regalado was part of the winning 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay. He also won the 100 fly and the 1000 free. His 1000 time was a new school record, breaking the record previously held by Ortiz. Ortiz won the 200 free, 100 free and the 500 free and was part of the winning 200 free relay.
Women's Swimming: The Mars Hill women's swimming team rolled past King and Lindsey Wilson Friday evening, sweeping both meets convincingly inside Harrell Pool. Kathryn Boland picked up two wins individually and one in the 200 medley relay. The Lions roared past Lindsey Wilson, 165-91 and dominated King, 172-71 over the course of 14 events. Boland, Haley Horton, Abby Harty, and Rachel Nichols took the 200 medley relay. Boland also won the 500 free and the 100 fly. Haley Horton won the 50 backstroke and Abby Harty won the 50 breaststroke.
Men's Cross Country: Noah Allison led the Lions to a fourth place overall finish at the Queen City Invitational, running a personal best 25:10.00 in the 8K race. Several Lions posted their best overall times including Garrett Farrimond, Cameron Lackey, Matthew Rogers, Brad and Bryan Barbee and Chris Gomez. The Lions will prepare to repeat as champions at the SAC Championships on Saturday, October 21.
Women's Cross Country: The Mars Hill Lions women's cross country team placed 12 out of 13 teams Friday afternoon at the Queen City Invite. Hannah Jones ran a personal best time in the 5K, with a time of 25:24.00. Nyla Feeney was the top Lions' runner with a time of 19:59.00. She finished 44th overall. Rachel Strickland finished 68th with a time of 20:48.00.
Volleyball: The Lions were victorious in one of their five matches over the week. The victory came against Lander on the second day of SAC/PBC Crossover play. The Lions won in three sets and Rebecca Butler collected her 1,000th career kill. Mars Hill was downed earlier in the week in conference action against Lincoln Memorial in four sets. They dropped both games on the opening day of crossover play against USC Aiken and Augusta in three and four sets, respectively. A thrilling final match on Day Two saw Mars Hill come up short in a comeback bid against Georgia College. Lauren Hochstetler led the offense with 54 kills over the five games. Sally Anne Johnson had 15 blocks during crossover play.
