Athletic Highlights: February 5-February 12, 2018
Women's Basketball: The Lions dropped both South Atlantic Conference matchups this past week to Tusculum and Lenoir-Rhyne. The Pioneers toppled Mars Hill by a score of 100-39 while the Bears emerged victorious by a score of 81-46. Mariah Johnson led the Lions in both games with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Men's Basketball: Mars Hill lost both road contests last week to Tusculum and Lenoir-Rhyne 97-71 and 79-64, respectively. Bennett Wilson led the Lions with 19 points and four assists against the Pioneers Wednesday night. Justen Hartfield recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Against the Bears, Hartfield and Austin Gilyard each had 12 points. Gilyard added six assists.
Softball: The Lions were forced to cancel their contests against Mercyhurst due to weather conditions. The home opener is scheduled for Saturday, February 17 versus Belmont Abbey at 1 p.m.
Men's Tennis: The Lions downed Belmont Abbey, 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon. Ben Reid picked up a singles victory along with a double win with partner Tom Farman. The duos of Kyrel Trim and Pedro Pinassi and Rodrigo Ramos and Fernando Neto each won their doubles contests also. Ramos and Neto also won their respective singles matches.
Baseball: Mars Hill went 0-3 during the week, dropping a contest against Southern Wesleyan, 6-4, and both games against Emmanuel by scores of 5-0 and 4-2, respectively. Brett Brubaker, Gray McCurry and Matt Honeycutt each had two hits versus SWU. Honeycutt had two RBIs. In the doubleheader against Emmanuel, Josh Hall had three hits and one RBI. Honeycutt also had three hits. The Lions take on Limestone on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and have a four-game weekend series with Kutztown at home. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m. with Sunday's games starting at 12:30 p.m.
Women's Lacrosse: Olivia Hokanson scored the first goal in program history and, along with Kiersten Foust, led the inaugural Mars Hill women's lacrosse team to victory in their first ever game, defeating Brevard 13-10. The duo each scored four goals. Other goal scorers included Molly Tobias (2), Taylor Burgess, Rebecca Dallman and Victoria Eckard. Alexa Holleran made nine saves.
Men's Lacrosse: The Lions opened their 2018 season with a 15-4 loss to Mount Olive. Goalkeeper Ryan Kearney made 24 saves in the losing effort. Parker Beaudry led the Lions with two goals on the afternoon. Dima Ferreira had two assists.
