Athletic Highlights: November 6– November 13, 2017
Football: Mars Hill lost to Newberry 28-0 in their season finale Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field. Turnovers plagued the Lions in the loss. Newberry scored 21 of their 28 points directly off of Mars Hill miscues. Elijah Jett rushed for 80 yards on 14 carries averaging 5.7 yards per run. Craig Rucker caught four passes for 36 yards. Chris Leamon recorded a game high 13 tackles (11 solo) and four tackles-for-loss. Anthony Phillips followed with nine tackles, 1.5 sacks and one tackle-for-loss. Anthony McGill and Jerjuan Edwards tallied seven tackles apiece in the game.
Women's Basketball: The Lions came out of the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge with a 1-1 record, picking up a win against Converse on Saturday. Mars Hill dropped their Friday contest against King, 67-53. Sheena Johnson and Tiffany Holloway each had 12 points and eight rebounds in the effort. Mariah Johnson added five assists. Maintaining their perfect record against Converse, the Lions escaped with a 66-60 win. Sheena Johnson once again led the team with 16 points. Maddie Webb had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Gabby Gianikos potted 10 points as well. Mars Hill hosts Belmont Abbey for their first home game of the 2017 season on Tuesday, November 14 at 8 p.m. in Stanford Arena.
Men's Basketball: Mars Hill dropped both of their contests at the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge over the weekend, falling to Belmont Abbey and Limestone. Bennett Wilson had 23 points in 26 minutes against the Crusaders while adding three steals to his stat sheet. Vernon Jackson added 11 points along with five rebounds and two assists. Belmont Abbey came away with a 92-83 win. Charles Moore and Justen Hartfield each put up 25 against Limestone the following day. Moore assisted on six buckets and Hartfield on five. Nassyr Daniel led the team with eight rebounds in the 106-92 loss. The Lions open up their home schedule with a 6 p.m. contest against Southern Wesleyan on Tuesday, November 14 inside Stanford Arena.
Volleyball: The Lions split their final two games of the 2017 regular season, picking up a 3-1 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne and getting swept by South Atlantic Conference leading Anderson. Lauren Hochstetler led the Lions with 22 kills over the two contests. Hochstetler, along with Rebecca Butler, Sara Fahrenbrook and Ellen Davis were honored as part of a Senior Day presentation prior to Saturday's contest versus the Trojans. Mars Hill kicks off SAC tournament play on Tuesday, November 14 when they travel to Charlotte, N.C. to face no. 3 seed, Queens.
