Athletic Highlights: January 29-February 5, 2018
Women's Basketball: The Lions dropped both South Atlantic Conference matchups this past week to Lincoln Memorial and Coker by scores of 91-62 and 75-65, respectively. Mariah Johnson led the Lions offensively in both games, scoring 18 and 22 points, respectively. Valeriya Pokrovskaya had a career-high 16 points versus Lincoln Memorial, followed by a 13 point effort against Coker.
Men's Basketball: Mars Hill lost to No. 1 ranked Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday evening and fell to Coker in a closely contested game. Austin Gilyard posted a career-high 25 points against Coker on Saturday afternoon in the 92-84 loss. He also led the Lions against the Railsplitters with 17 points in their 100-68 defeat. Luke Van-Rijn had a double-double against LMU with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Softball: The Lions were swept by Lander to open up their 2018 season on the road Thursday afternoon in double-header action. Mars Hill fell by scores of 6-2 and 8-3. Ragan Broome had four hits over the span of both games, including a double and homerun.
Baseball: Mars Hill claimed one victory over the weekend series with Erskine to kick-off their 2018 season. After dropping the first game of their season on Friday, 6-5, the Lions split with the Fleet on Saturday afternoon, losing game one of the double-header, 12-7, but responding with a 6-2 victory to close out the three-game series. Gray McCurry had a team-high four hits, including two doubles and a homerun, over the three games. Cody Cline picked up three RBI over the weekend to lead the team.
Women's Track and Field: Shahnika Williams placed sixth in the long jump Friday afternoon at the Buccaneer Invitational with a mark of 5.62 meters (18'5.25"). Christine Foresha and Ayana Dennis won their respective 400 meter dash heats with times of 61.53 and 67.40, respectively. On Saturday, Nyla Feeney placed second in her mile race section, posting a time of 5:52.83. Tiffany Holloway finished 11th overall in the shot put with a mark of 11.85 meters (38'10.5").
Men's Track and Field: The Lions took part in the Buccaneer Invitational at East Tennessee State University over the weekend. The team of Noah Allison, Nicholas Izquierdo, Jared Stanley and Garrett Farrimond placed sixth overall in the distance medley. Allison finished eighth overall in the one mile race on Saturday afternoon with a time of 4:27.28. Tyler Holloway placed 23rd overall in the shot put with a mark of 11.50 meters (37'8.75").
