Athletic Highlights: January 22-January 29, 2018
Women's Basketball: The Lions were defeated by No. 5 Carson-Newman, 106-48, Wednesday evening. Mariah Johnson dropped 20 points to lead the Lions. Valeriya Pokrovskaya added 10 points. The Lions scheduled contest against Newberry was rescheduled for February 19, 2018. Mars Hill takes on Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. in Stanford Arena and then host Coker on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Men's Basketball: Mars Hill snapped its 10-game losing streak when freshman Austin Gilyard drained two free-throws with under one second remaining to upset Carson-Newman, 78-77, Wednesday evening. In a thrilling back-and-forth effort, the Lions emerged victorious for the first time since December 5, 2017. The scheduled game against Newberry Saturday afternoon has been rescheduled to February 19, 2018. The Lions square off against No. 2 Lincoln Memorial in Stanford Arena on Wednesday, January 31 at 8 p.m. and then host Coker on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Women's Tennis: The Lions were swept by UNC Asheville on Friday afternoon, 7-0. They return home to kick off their 2018 regular season with a matchup against Southern Wesleyan at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 10 at the Hart Tennis Complex.
Women's Swimming: The Lions remained unbeaten in head-to-head competitions this season, defeating Milligan Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. Abby Harty picked up two individual event wins and was part of the winning 200 yard medley relay and 800 yard freestyle relay teams. Kathryn Boland won three individual races and joined Harty in the 200 yard medley team. Other winners included Haley Horton, Rachel Nichols and Lorna Doorman. The team was also honored by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Monday morning by being named to the Scholar All-America Team for the fall semester. The team held a combined 3.20 GPA.
Men's Swimming: Mars Hill downed Milligan on Saturday afternoon, 162-56, on Senior Day. Seniors Andy Disco and Matthew Walker picked up three individual event victories and were members of the winning 200 yard medley relay team. Other individual winners included Angel Regalado, Erwin Ortiz, Vitor Goncalves and Elijah Sears. The team was also honored by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Monday morning by being named to the Scholar All-America Team for the fall semester. The team held a combined 3.25 GPA.
