Athletic Highlights: January 8-January 15, 2018
Women's Basketball: The Lions were swept in their three-game road trip, falling to Newberry, Anderson and Catawba, respectively. Mariah Johnson had 43 points over the three contests including a 21 point effort against Anderson. Gabby Gianikos led Mars Hill with 16 points versus Catawba and Shayla Smith posted two double-doubles out of the three games, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds against Newberry and Catawba, respectively. Mars Hill hosts Wingate on Saturday afternoon in Stanford Arena for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
Men's Basketball: Mars Hill lost all three contests last week to Newberry, Anderson and Catawba, respectively. Bennett Wilson scored a combined 66 points over the three games to lead the Lions offensively in each game. Austin Gilyard was the second leading scorer over that span with 47 points. The Lions face Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday night before returning to Stanford Arena for a matchup against Wingate.
Women's Swimming: Mars Hill remains unbeaten in dual meets this season, picking up victories over Emory & Henry and King, 117-81 and 130-85, respectively. Abby Harty was victorious in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events with times of 2:04.59 and 5:38.86 on the evening. Kathryn Boland took the 200 yard IM (2:16.61) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:33.21) to help Mars Hill secure their victories. Haley Horton also picked up a win in the 100 yard freestyle, swimming a time of 57.52.
Men's Swimming: The Lions pulled off two victories against Emory & Henry and King to improve to 6-1 on the year. Erwin Ortiz claimed victories in the 200 yard freestyle and 500 yard freestyle while also being a member of the winning 200 yard medley team. Angel Regaldo, who was also a member of the 200 yard medley team, picked up a victory in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:23.59. Other individual victors were Elijah Sears in the 200 yard breaststroke, Vitor Gonclaves in the 50 yard freestyle and Jake Moore in the 200 butterfly.
Women's Track and Field: On Day 1 of the ETSU Invitational, Shaniqua Stevens set a Mars Hill record in the triple jump with a mark of 35'9.25". She placed second amongst fellow DII competitors and finished eighth overall. On Saturday, another Mars Hill record was rewritten, this time by Shahnika Williams. Williams, in the long jump, recorded a mark of 18'7.25". With her fourth place finish, Williams ranks 12th in the nation for DII.
Men's Track and Field: Mars Hill opened 2018 at the ETSU Invitational. Kenan Foxx competed in the weight throw, recording a mark of 38'5", good for 33rd overall. Noah Allison was the top finisher for the Lions in the 3000 meter race, placing 23rd overall with a time of 9:12.60. Bryan Barbee set a personal record in the race, recording a time of 9:52.66.
