Athletic Highlights: January 1-January 8, 2018
Football: Senior wide receiver Keshaun Taylor was named to the D2Football.com Honorable Mention All-America team. Taylor, who also earned AFCA Division II Second Team All-American and D2CCA All-Super Region 2 First Team honors, ends his Mars Hill career with 217 receptions for 3,681 yards and 29 touchdowns.
Women's Basketball: The Mars Hill Lions lost both of their home contests to Tusculum and Queens, respectively. In the 98-68 defeat, Brooke Vilcinskas shined with 15 points, including a 10 point third period. Alexus Grubbs had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Mariah Johnson also scored 13 points. In an exciting comeback bid, the Lions fell just short of the Royals, 65-62. Johnson paced the way with a season-high 18 points, followed by Shayla Smith's new benchmark of 17 points. The Lions have three road SAC contests this week, starting with Newberry on Monday. The Trojans of Anderson host Mars Hill on Wednesday and the Lions end their week with a road contest against Catawba.
Men's Basketball: The Lions dropped both of their SAC contests in their return to Stanford Arena, falling to Tusculum and No. 2 ranked Queens. Senior Luke Van-Rijn scored a team-high 14 points and pulled down five rebounds in the 85-71 defeat. Vernon Jackson chipped in with 11 points. After a tightly contest first half, the Lions were unable to keep the Royals at bay, losing 93-64. Austin Gilyard tied his career-high with 23 points. Jackson matched his previous output with 11 points and Nassyr Daniel collected a team-high eight rebounds.
