Athletic Highlights: March 26-April 2, 2018
Baseball: Mars Hill went 4-2 over the week, including a three-game sweep over SAC rival Coker. The Lions scored 70 runs in those games, including two 20-run outings (03/28 vs. King; 03/31 vs. Coker-Game One). Dropping the first two games of the week to Catawba, Mars Hill strung together four straight wins. Matt Honeycutt collected 14 RBI and hit six homeruns. Honeycutt hit .667, had a .724 on-base percentage and a 1.571 slugging percentage. Christian Stampler added seven RBI and four homeruns.
Softball: The Lions finished the week with a 1-3 record, earning a split with Newberry on Friday. The Lions opened the week getting swept by Catawba by scores of 4-3 and 7-0. The Wolves would eight-run rule the Lions in game one of Saturday's contest, but roaring back in game two, the Lions returned the favor with a 12-2 win. In the victory for the Lions, Taylor Lail clobbered a grand slam to center field in the bottom of the fourth and in the bottom of the fifth, with a chance to end the game, Christiana Marasa hammered a three-run homerun over the centerfield fence. Bobbi Jones, in the bottom of the second, hit a two-run homerun to left-centerfield.
Men's Lacrosse: Mars Hill battled tough against the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial, but a penalty riddled third quarter saw the Lions give up six goals en route to an 18-9 loss at home. Dima Ferreira led the Lions offensively, scoring four goals and assisting on two.
Women's Lacrosse: The Lions went 0-2 in South Atlantic Conference play this past week with a 16-13 defeat to Tusculum and 20-4 loss to Catawba. Olivia Hokanson had seven goals over the two games. Gabby Gianikos (2g, 2a) had four points versus the Pioneers.
Men's Tennis: Mars Hill lost to Tusculum, 8-1, and Coker, 7-2, during the week. Ben Reid won the lone Lions' singles match against the Pioneers with Fernando Neto and Kyrel Trim each winning their respective singles matches versus the Cobras.
Women's Tennis: The Lions went 0-2 over the week, losing 9-0 to Tusculum and falling 7-2 to Coker. Evan Lake picked up a singles win and, along with Jasha Geerdink, a doubles victory over the Cobras.
Women's Golf: The Mars Hill women's golf team placed 10th at the Sunoco Campbell Oil Classic. Emilee Wenmoth was the top finisher for the Lions, placing 43rd overall.
