Athletic Highlights: April 9-April 16, 2018
Baseball: Mars Hill went 3-3 this past week, sweeping Brevard on Wednesday and picking up one win over Anderson during the three-game weekend series. They dropped two to the Trojans and their Tuesday game against King. Brett Brubaker drove in the two runs against the Tornado and added another two RBI in game two against the Trojans. Christian Stampler had a total of seven RBI in the two-game sweep over Brevard. He added three RBI in game one against Anderson for 10 on the week. Matt Honeycutt also had seven RBI in the six games played. On Saturday, 11 seniors were honored on Senior Day (Lance Edwards, Shomarii Thomas, Christian Stampler, Josh Hall, Chandler Young, Kaleb McCurry, Travis Owens, Fausto Turro, Zac Brown, Alan Kolb, Alec Bivins). Troy Hall was named the SAC Pitcher of the week. Hall, a junior from Greeneville, Tenn., made three appearances on the mound for the Lions, earning a win and two saves. He threw six innings, allowing four hits, no earned runs and had two strikeouts. He earned saves against UVA-Wise and Piedmont International, while picking up a win against SAC foe Carson-Newman.
Softball: The Lions finished the week with a 2-2 record, earning splits with Lincoln Memorial and Coker. On Tuesday, the Lions lost game one in extra innings by a score of 16-13, but rallied to take game two, 11-9. Emiley Burriss had six RBI on the day. On Saturday, Mars Hill took game one by a score of 7-2, but fell 10-5 in game two. Ragan Broome went 4-for-8 with six RBI and two homeruns on the afternoon.
Men's Lacrosse: Mars Hill dropped their final home contest of the 2018 season to No. 3 Lenoir-Rhyne by a score of 14-6 on Saturday afternoon. Jake Trafton (2g, 1a) led the Lions offensively with three points. Prior to the game, Quinlan Blackmon, Dima Ferreira, Ryan Kearney, Alex Lipsky and Tucker Sharrow were recognized as part of Senior Day.
Women's Lacrosse: The Lions went 0-2 this past week with a 14-11 defeat versus North Greenville and 23-22 overtime loss against Coker. Olivia Hokanson had 13 goals over the two games, including eight versus the Cobras on her Senior Day Saturday evening. Molly Tobias collected 12 points (3g, 9a) over the two games.
Men's Tennis: Mars Hill went 0-3 over the week, being shutout by both Lincoln Memorial and Wingate. They lost 7-2 to Queens in between those matches. The duo of Ben Reid and Rodrigo Ramos won their doubles match against the Royals while Pedro Pinassi won his singles match.
Women's Tennis: The Lions went 0-2 over the week, losing 8-1 to Lincoln Memorial and 9-0 to Wingate. Jasha Geerdink won her singles match against the Railsplitters on Wednesday. Geerdink was recognized on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
Men's Golf: The Mars Hill men's golf team placed ninth at the South Atlantic Conference Championships. Harry Butler placed fourth overall.
Men's Track and Field: The Mars Hill men's track and field team placed 15th at the 2018 Catamount Classic. Cameron France posted a 10th place finish in the 100 meter dash and ninth place finish in the 200 meter dash. Noah Allison and Skyler Cantrell posted ninth place finishes in the 1500 meter and 5000 meter runs, respectively. Spencer Shade finished third in the pole vault.
Women's Track and Field: The Mars Hill women's track and field team finished 18th at the 2018 Catamount Classic. Shahnika Williams finished fifth in the long jump and 11th in the 100 meter dash. Jordan Bair placed 10th in the pole vault while Tiffany Holloway, in the shotput, finished eighth.
