Athletic Highlights: October 29– November 6, 2017
Football: The Lions defeated UNC Pembroke 56-44 in non-conference football action on Senior Day. Two school records were tied in the victory. Keshaun Taylor tied his own school record with four touchdown receptions in today's win. He caught nine passes for 183 yards and threw a pass to Craig Rucker that covered 54 yards that directly setup another Mars Hill score. For his performance, Taylor was named the SAC Player of the Week. David Salmon tied Jon Richt's record with six touchdown passes in a single game. Salmon threw for 348 yards completing 18-28 passes. Rucker hauled in six passes for 174 yards and one touchdown. Malik Prescott rushed 32 times for 168 yards and one score. Earl Adams led the Lions' defense with nine tackles, 1.5 sacks and two tackles-for-loss. Anthony McGill added eight tackles (7 solo), a sack and two for loss. Tyson Daniels posted six tackles (4 solo) and a game high three sacks. Mars Hill set new season highs in rushes (45), yards rushing (201), touchdown passes (6), total offense (603), points (56) and sacks (7).
Men's Soccer: Mars Hill fell 3-1 in a South Atlantic Conference quarterfinal match against Lincoln-Memorial on Tuesday. Elliot Tate scored the only Lions' goal on a penalty kick for his first of the season. In the SAC regular season awards that were released prior to postseason play, Oscar Mitchell earned SAC 2nd team all-conference while Stian Sanner and Cam Macer earned SAC honorable mention all-conference.
Women's Basketball: The Lions kicked off their 2017-18 season with a 71-60 loss in an exhibition against two-time defending Big South Conference champion UNC Asheville. Baylea Loven had a team-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Sheena Johnson was 3-for-4 from three-point range. Mariah Johnson added nine assists and five rebounds.
Men's Basketball: Mars Hill travelled to Raleigh, coming up on the losing end against NC State, 109-66. Nassyr Daniel led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds on the night in his debut as a Lion. Vernon Jackson had a team-high nine rebounds along with 11 points.
Men's Swimming: The Lions finished second in the four team meet held at Milligan College. No. 15 Carson-Newman came away with the overall victory, outscoring Mars Hill 493-436. Erwin Ortiz was the only winner on the men's side, claiming victory in the 200 meter freestyle in 1:55.20. He also had a second place finish in the 100 meter freestyle and 400 meter freestyle.
Women's Swimming: Mars Hill finished runner-up to no. five Carson-Newman in the four team meet held at Milligan College. The Lions trailed the Eagles 531-440. Abby Harty placed first in the 400 meter freestyle in 4:46.94 and Haley Horton took the 100 meter backstroke top spot, clocking a time of 1:08.72.
Women's Golf: The Lions finished in last place at the Newberry Fall Invitational. Janie Gooch was the top finished for the Lions in 38th place. Emilee Wenmouth followed in 36th.
Volleyball: Mars Hill won all three of their SAC contests, taking down Carson-Newman (3-0), Coker (3-2) and Newberry (3-1). Lauren Hochstetler led the Lions with 31 kills. Sarah Pasour had 78 assists, 34 digs and six aces. The Lions currently sit tied for sixth in the SAC and wrap up the regular season with matches against Lenoir-Rhyne and Anderson on Tuesday, November 7 and Saturday, November 11, respectively.
